ways of doing nothing...
posted at 02:28 AM

Hey folks, I'm still alive, and I've been keeping myself terribly busy being a lazy boy at home since "Forbidden City" ended last Saturday!

Truth be told, I was in utter exhaustion after the whole run was over. For not only did we put in all our energies and heart in the show, we partied like no tomorrow subsequently...

After the final curtain call, the cast and orchestra members and friends and families etc (sadly the crew had to strike out the stage) adjourned over to Forbidden City Bar and Restaurant at Clarke Quay (how apt hor?) for a buffet supper...

It's a pity we were all spread out over several long tables, and despite some photo taking and general mingling, we didn't get to say much to each other. We didn't even dance as we did during our earlier Pre-Show Buzz Party (see previous posts)...

Anyway, the next day was Sunday (also Children's Day), and the notable occasion was that a whole bunch of local actors and theatre performers got together at Happy to give a surprise celebration party for Ashley Lim, our fabulous yet incredibly humble hair designer (or Hair Artist, as Sebastian Tan puts it)...

It was after all Ashley's 20th year of working in our local theatre scene, making guys and girls look good with his creative and swift hair designs in more than 120 shows. ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SHOWS!!! Which local theatre actor has done that many shows in his/her career???

More about Ashley's party on the way soon, together with heaps of photos. Yeah yeah, be patient please...

Anyway it was a whole night of clubbing for many of us. The big breakfast thereafter barely managed to replenish the energy loss...

So... the whole of Monday, Tuesday and most part of Wednesday, was spent idling at home, watching TV, reading books, and surfing the net and browsing through other people's online journals while stubbornly trying not to touch my own blog...

During this time, I had read through parts of Paulo Coelho's inspirational new collection "Like The Flowing River", Taiwanese illustrator and travel writer Zhao Yu Xuan's beautifully illustrated travel journals on West Germany, Italy and Paris, as well as Katie Coutt's real life psychic experiences in "The Ghost Whisperer"...

I also ate heaps, and besides the usual hawker fare from downstairs, I was also treated to yummy Japanese-styled Teppanyaki buffet at Shima Restaurant as well as delicious Jiangnan cuisine at Crystal Jade. The latter was to celebrate a fellow blogger's birthday, and champagne flowed off The Balcony...

Which means lots more food photos, as usual, on the way soon...

Isn't it amazing? While busily trying to do nothing, I have actually done heaps...

No wonder I am still exhausted... zzz ZZZ zzz...

(Footnote: Will credit the individuals accordingly in my next few posts...)

illo friday - quiet & contentment...
posted at 04:43 PM under snapshots of merman...

After a long period of absence on Illustration Friday, I have decided to make a quiet comeback, with a simple one-minute piece...

...QUIET...

Edric Hsu - Silence

The above Chinese character means "Quiet" or "Silence"...

Hope you like it. Will come up with another version later...

Okay so I've decided to forgo the 3 hr version of "Quiet" that I created but lost to a computer crash. It's probably not meant to be...

Here's another calligraphic creation as requested by David, who's been one of the most generous, giving friends to all of us...

...CONTENTMENT...

Edric Hsu - Contentment

The above characters say that "happiness is to be contented with what you have", or something to that effect...

Hope you like it...

is singapore dreaming of a little miss sunshine?...
posted at 01:14 AM

Caught a couple of movies over the past week...

Singapore Dreaming

Great local effort, great acting by local actors, and plenty of focus on local issues, particularly the Continual Chase of the 5 "C"s (namely Cash, Credit Cards, Condo, Car and Club Memberships)...

All these = $$$$$...

In the end, as one of the characters said, the 6th "C" is inevitable: Coffin...

Many of the scenarios rang true and were played in all honesty. There are just too many Singaporeans following these standard paths, and most of that leads to similar ends. Some just cannot make themselves get out of this cookie-cutter mould, and somehow even managed to make themselves feel happy and contented...

If every one of us share and follow the same dream, where would that lead us? Especially when this dream involved a materialistic approach to life...

I have been fortunate and blessed to be able to walk out my own path on mostly my own terms, but it's a very conscious effort on my part...

Still, it irks me that everytime I was introduced as a full-time actor, the standard response would be along the lines of: "Can you survive?", "Can make a living meh?", "How much money can you earn?", "What's your retirement plan?"...

Those who are likely to ask me these kind of questions, or want to judge my lifestyle, please stay far away from me. I don't need to justify my choice in life to anyone...

Found myself tearing a little in some of the scenes, as did many of my fellow audience members. I am sure this show has touched many of us...

Little Miss Sunshine

This is an amazing movie, typically cliche yet unexpectedly fun in how the story played out...

It's about yet another dysfunctional family, a group of social misfits trying to make do with each other albeit with a huge amount of reluctance...

Yet despite all their individual problems and differences, they managed to come together and lend their support to the awkward little kid who have dreams of winning a beauty pageant...

There are many things going wrong for these characters, yet all of them have their equally humourous moments. Could there be humour in tragedy? Very much so, it's all in here...

I'm sure you've all heard it before, but I'll say it again: If there's only one movie to watch this year, let this be it! And expect fine, touching performances by each and everyone of this ensemble cast...

Stuck On You

I am such a fan of Greg Kinnear now. He's great in his shows such as the above "Little Miss Sunshine", "As Good As It Gets" and also this show "Stuck On You" that just played on TV just now...

In this comedy, you get a pair of Siamese Twins, or they prefered to be called Conjoined Twins since they are not Siamese (duhz), who look nothing like each other, and with different personalities, ambitions and dreams...

And girls...

I didn't catch this show when it played at the movies, as I thought "Oh well, must be some silly spoof of Chang & Eng, the original Siamese Twins". Having played one of these conjoined twins with RJ Rosales in 1999, I was very sympathetic and strangely protective of these characters, so I was not keen to see them being parodied...

But "Stuck On You" proved to be a heartwarming and sweet comedy, with fine performances by Greg Kinnear and Matt Damon. The cameos by Meryl Streep and Cher simply added the icing to this cake...

No, wait! There is also a cherry on top of this icing, and that is Greg Kinnear's performance at the end of the movie. It is one of the most hilarious yet spot on performance of the classic song, "Summertime"!

Enjoy!

Here's wishing all who are celebrating...

. . . HAPPY HALLOWEEN . . .

And since the past week's Illustration Friday challenge was "Ghost", I thought it might still be appropriate, so I'll post my belated version here anyway...

GHOST

For those of you who are non-Chinese, the above image is a stylised form of the Chinese word "Ghost", pronounced as "Gui3" (said in a scooping manner)...

May the only spirits you encounter today be the ones that can be poured out of bottles...
