r.v., just my luck, superman returns & king and the clown... posted at 03:41 AM These are the shows I've watched recently, some funny, some sad, some inspiring, some out of this world... 1) R.V. (More...) 2) Just My Luck [break=More...] It was just our luck we ended up at the second row from the screen, in a small theatre. We get to see Lindsay Lohan all stretched up and blown all out of proportions. Not really a baaaad thing... She's all cool and groovy one moment and kooky and klutzy the next. Her romantic opposite, Chris Pine, gets his bad luck transfered to her simply by kissing each other. Yeah right... Unbelievable plot notwithstanding, they made a nice pair onscreen. I don't remember any Fate card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot though. Anyway, I loved the graphics on the opening credits. I might have enjoyed this show more if it wasn't past midnight and if we'd better seats... [/break] 3) Superman Returns [break=More...] WOOOOO! He was my childhood hero (I even had a Superman suit with cape and all when I was a wee kid!) and after watching this new movie, he is now my current hero too! I totally enjoyed the new special effects that technology is now capable of, makes everything looks so real. Wish I could fly... Brandon Routh is well cast as the Man of Steel, for not only was his resemblance to the late Christopher Reeves so uncanny, he was also pretty effective in his portrayal. Anyone would feel safe in his presence, I think. Kevin Spacey makes an apt Lex Luthor too, even though his plans to conquer the world seemed so childish and lame. His moll, Parker Posey, provided some comic relief, especially with the unfortunate pair of pooches. It's a pity for James Marsden, for giving up his Cyclops' laser eyes power to Superman this time. Only gripe is that Kate Bosworth looked too young to be 6 years older than Margot Kidder's Lois Lane in the old movies... Doesn't matter, the whole look and feel of this movie, down to the pseudo-retro stylings and decor and soundtrack, is enough to transport me into a fantasy comic-book turned movie world, and never wanna come back to Earth... [/break] 4) King and the Clown [break=More...] I first encountered this movie through an MTV of its theme song, which you can check out by CLICKING HERE... Based on such a touching song and visuals, I was fully expecting a sob-fest for the actual movie. But although there were many moving moments in the film, and I could feel the pain in each characters' plights, I didn't shed a single tear throughout (as I did for Superman Returns, strangely)... Still, this film has many reasons worth watching, not only for the touching story about a group of jesters and the Joseon king they were mocking in their street acts. There were some scenes that bordered on homo-eroticism, but nothing explicit at all. However, that didn't stop the girl in my next seat from cringing everytime something seemingly gay was mentioned (open your minds already, people!!) All the hype about the male actor who looked as pretty as a girl was true. In fact all the actors in the film were well cast and believable, making each character all the more tragic. Adding to that was the fact that a portion of this tale is based on actual Korean history, it's enough to value for money already... [/break]

ching's kitchen... posted at 12:22 PM Okay, it's official! My new favourite cook show is now "Ching's Kitchen" (weekdays, 12pm on Channel 5)...
(More About Ching, The Chef...) This pretty lass sure kicks-ass with her quick and easy Chinese styled meals. Her clipped British accent and youthful cheery manner, together with simple fuss-free recipes, make the show a real joy to watch...

adultery at giraffe... posted at 01:52 AM This evening, I met up with some of the folks from a play that I did last year, "Adultery", and we had a pleasant evening at the Giraffe Restaurant and Bar...
![]()
Dinner was pretty much okay, drinks were so-so, but the prices kinda matched the high-end classy decor. There were plenty of laughter, as can be expected with a bunch of corny people as us, and I certainly enjoyed myself catching up with them. It's been a year and a couple of months since our production, and most of us hadn't had a chance to meet till now. It's a pity our director Lionel Chok wasn't in town to join us... bumped into zul... posted at 02:32 AM On the way to the dinner at Giraffe (see previous entry), I bumped into Zul, an old friend from my SAF MDC days (that was way back in 1992-5!) He's currently an events organiser at SAFRA Mount Faber, which is a few steps away from my place, but I have never seen him till today... It's been more than a decade since I last saw Zul, but I think neither of us have changed much. Well, nothing except that he's married and now a father of two cute girls... We boarded the same train, and midway his wife, Rose, also joined us... As I had my camera with me at all times (I'm always operationally ready!), I took the opportunity to shoot a couple of pics with Zul and Rose, and here they are...

a bit of family, a bit of food... posted at 01:26 AM This weekend I'll be performing the tap dance item with Richard and the other guys (we've yet to come up with a group name) for the NDP Family Day Show. It's actually a full dress rehearsal, or preview of the actual event, minus the goodie bags...
Performers are given complimentary tickets to this show, and I decided to pass mine on to my younger sister Alain, so she could come watch with her two kids, Sheryl and Shermaine... Managed to pass Alain the tickets today at Raffles City, and since we've not met for some time and she's reporting to work late anyway, we stayed on to chat a bit and catch up...
Alain and Edric Hsu After that, she left for work and I headed over to the gym... (Click here to see what happens next...) [ Feeling... * giggly * ] |

pages from 8 days... posted at 08:03 PM Wahahaha, I just noticed my face appearing in the current issue of 8 Days magazine (#820) and for something that I was involved in years ago! LOL
I wonder if anyone's able to spot me though, but that's not the important issue here... Anyway, I was browsing through this issue, and found this amusing passage by Jason Hahn on a currently touche subject... Oh well... [ Feeling... * quixotic * ] [ Reading... * 8 Days * ] |

ndp 2006-family day show... posted at 11:18 PM Today, just a month before the actual National Day Parade, all the performers and personnel involved have come together to put up a special preview show for our family and friends... Here are some photos of the tap group that I am performing in...
It was a truly big-scale event, and I've invited my family members to come support. Several Livejournal friends got tickets to watch too, hope they enjoyed the show as much I did! It's a pity Jonathan's still stuck in Paris and couldn't make it for this event. Hopefully he'll be able to return soon, for we'll be performing again next week for a stadium full of primary school children...

illo friday - skyline... posted at 09:58 PM under snapshots of merman... I have not participated in IllustrationFriday.com's weekly challenges since January this year, but I have been itching to get back to it... So with a bit of spare time today, I managed to come up with something meaningful to me for this week's topic: _____________ Skyline _____________
"Skyline" ~ Edric Hsu 600 x 600 pixels Adobe Photoshop 7.0 & Genius MousePen 8x6 Image hosted by: Photobucket.com Perhaps it was my involvement in this year's National Day Parade, or perhaps I really missed my family especially my late parents, for this illo I wanted to convey a sense of home, by featuring the outline of a loving family over-looking the skyline of our hometown, Singapore... The images were taken randomly off the internet and edited using digital tools, but the feeling comes direct from my heart... Hope you can feel it too...

ndp 2006-n.e. show... posted at 01:04 AM Last Saturday, besides a terribly full buffet lunch at Top of the M, the other major event was the NDP 2006 NE Show for primary school students at the National Stadium... Somehow, this show was even more exhilarating than the previous week's Family Show. Perhaps it's due to the full audience turnout and hyper energy of the school kids, or perhaps it's the new lighting effects. Even the fireworks seemed more vibrant... Anyway, it was really fun! After the show, all the performers from the different groups and associations had to let the chartered buses send the students back to their respective schools before our turn... Our tap dance group was among the FIRST to arrive at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and soon after many other hundreds of people came in too. It was as if we were about to put on another performance... If we expected to leave after only a couple of minutes' wait, we were all so wrong. Our group ended up among the LAST to depart, some THREE AND A HALF HOURS LATER... There still wasn't any sign of our chartered bus, but thankfully one of the officers generously gave us a lift back to Fort Canning Park where I had to take a cab home... Boy, was I exhausted by then, and naturally not in the best of moods... But that was last week. Now, I'll show you exactly how I spent that THREE AND A HALF HOURS in the Singapore Indoor Stadium...

ndp 2006-stadium rehearsal 3... posted at 03:02 AM On Saturday, we had our 3rd NDP stadium rehearsal again, this time without the audience, and we danced without Richard (who'd sprained his back) and Jonathan (who's still stuck in Paris)... Even without the audience's cheering and hyper energy, it was still a fun rehearsal, and I really enjoyed performing right in front of a huge field of people indeed! Hope to have my own solo concert in such a big-scale event someday. :D Here are the pics I took with my N70 camera phone...

e-dreams... posted at 03:54 AM On Friday, right after a VO recording at Reeds Media for a product launch, I rushed over to Lake Holmz Condominium for the filming of a new tv project... While gorgeous Michelle Saram and ever youthful Randall Tan plays the main couple, I get to play lovey-dovey hubby to the equally pretty Swyn Teo... All of them were wonderful company, which made the shoot a lot of fun during the long waiting moments... Here are the pics taken during the off camera moments...

(L-R) Randall, Swyn, Michelle and Edric Will reveal more about this show when the time is ripe. Stay tuned!

ndp 2006-preview show... posted at 04:36 PM It's been a crazy coupla weeks, and I've been constantly stretched to the limits. But after last night's exhilarating NDP Preview performance at the National Stadium, I feel quite energised again... Here are the photos...
The NDP 2006 Preview tickets, given to my ex-schoolmates
The tap dancers and the guy who cues us in...
Rosalyn Lee, one of the hosts of the event (More Post-Show Pics Within This Link...) Despite the fun I am having doing these NDP shows, I might really be missing out on a great opportunity to shoot a new TV commercial overseas, as filming dates coincide with the actual National Day itself. I really hope everything works out for the best... *keeping fingers crossed*

blessings for cousin hua... may he rest in peace... posted at 11:34 PM For those who have been following my blog earlier this year, I had asked for prayers and blessings to be sent to my cousin Tan Siew Hua, who suffered from cancer... It's been half a year, and right now his condition has deteriorated. He's been admitted to the hospital since last week, and apparently the cancer's been detected in his stomach, and he's just had a heart attack and now finding it hard to breathe or even sleep... Things are not looking too well, but we're all keeping our fingers crossed... Visiting him today at the Singapore General Hospital Blk 4 Level 8 Ward 48 Room 26 Bed 8, I found his family members by his side. However, he's still constantly at odds with his aged mother, my Eldest Aunt, and everytime she appears, he'll get terribly agitated. Now my aunt is resorting to waiting in the halls and peeking through the entrance to check on her ailing son when he's resting... When I witnessed that, my heart just broke, and tears started welling up. But I had to console Eldest Aunt and hope she'll be strong and take care of her own health too... It really didn't help that her other children, all in their late 40s or 50s, are also having health problems of their own... Anyway, for those reading this and have a moment to spare, may I ask for more prayers, healing thoughts, love and blessings be sent to Cousin Hua, my Eldest Aunt and their entire family to stay strong and find comfort and love in each other, and also for my cousin to suffer less and recover more... Thank you all in advance...
