more pics at pavane 2004...
posted at 01:55 PM

While rummaging through my countless folders of photo files just now, I found some pics taken in April last year, at the recording studio mentioned in my previous post...

This session was with Audrey and I, recorded just before Audrey left for Japan with her hubby...

herbal brew for beautiful voice...
posted at 01:58 PM under trivia and know-hows...

While on the topic of singing, I often had incidences where I lost my voice prior to recording, mostly due to stress and lack of discipline in my diet...

During the 1999 production of "Chang & Eng - The Musical", I was to replace Robin as "Eng" in that season's extended run, for a month. After a week of intensive understudying and singing at his key, as well as performing in my own ensemble roles, I finally lost my voice, just before my very first appearance as "Eng"!!

I wasn't the only one suffering this condition, a few of the cast members also had overworked their vocals. So the director, Ekachai, drove me to this Man Foong Loong Medical Hall at the block of flats next to Kreta Ayer Market...

Man Foong Loong Medical Hall

The uncle at the shop asked me what's wrong, and as I rattled out my list of ailments, he proceeded to pour and mix some herbal brews from various clay pots on a shelf into a bowl and made me drink it all in one go...

It tasted worse than vomit...

But since I am a sucker for Chinese herbal brews (I have loved the bitterness of the herbs ever since I was a kid), I was able to finish the entire bowl without having to take the preserved plums offered to change the taste...

I bought a bottle of the same brew to take away, which cost S$10. It had better work...

And sure it did!

By showtime, I had my voice back to its original condition and was able to perform in my very first leading role on stage!

And the rest is history...

Chang & Eng 1999  (Me & RJ Rosales as the Siamese Twins)

So now, everytime someone needs a health boost or is not feeling well, or loses his/her voice (as Siying did during the recording for "Yum Sing!" ), I'll recommend this shop...

But first, you must be able to stomach the "vomit"-tasting brew for it to work...

This photo (entry #198) was also taken during last year's trip to Father's hometown in Fuzhou, China on 29th September 2004, just a few months before he passed away...

The seats featured here were placed in a very neat order within the old hall of our Xu Family Clan Building...

After exploring the place, me and my brother Eric, as well as our sister-in-law, Yi Cai, attended a conference with other unfamiliar family members of the Xu Clan from other parts of the world. We were then treated to a banquet of delicious seafood and traditional dishes...

It was a real pity my Dad, who was suffering from the advanced stages of tongue cancer, couldn't join us in the feast...

something good, some "tink" wrong...
posted at 09:06 PM

Last night, I came home after a few hours of rehearsals for "Yum Sing!" to find myself spooked yet again...

Earlier in the day, I had used my food steamer to steam some Char Siew Pow (barbecued pork buns) for breakfast (which took only about 15mins), and after eating, I had washed and cleaned the steamer and switched it off...

But when I got back home and sat down at my desk to switch on my PC and TV to watch "Extreme Makeover", I suddenly heard a loud unscrewing sound followed by a "TINK!" from the kitchen...

It made me jump and my hair stand, man!

For I recognised these were the sounds that my food steamer would make when the timer is signalling "Time's Up!"!!!

And I had left the house and not touched that appliance for more than TEN hours!!!

Anyway... not everything was spooky yesterday...

The good parts included someone from Boku Films ("The Maid" ) calling and asking me to send them my updated CV and recent photos so they could cast me in their new movie!!!

Also, I attended the fitting for the upcoming TV commercial, and this time I not only have a "wife", I also got three cute little "kids"!!!

Shortly after that, I made time to visit my late Mum and Dad at Tang Gah Beo Temple, and burnt some offerings to them as well as to the deities and Goddess of Mercy for their blessings...

Then I went to Sitting In Pictures in answer to Gillian's casting call for some corporate videos, and met Craig whom I've worked with in "Adultery". He's funny as ever! LOL

There was a miscommunication which led to me having dinner alone at OA Bakery but their Thai Seafood Spaggetti Set Meal was great at only S$5! Only joined Siying and Jeremy at OrienWes as they were finishing up their meal...

The rehearsal for "Yum Sing!" started very late, but since we have VERY early filming today, I insisted we finish by 10pm. Thankfully, Sheng and Desmond gave me and Jeremy a ride home...

Only to hear...

"Grrrrr... rrrr... TINK!!!

running a different race..
posted at 03:25 PM

The current talk of the town is about bloggers: particularly those who spew vulgarities in their entries, and those two who got charged for spreading seditious remarks about other races in their blogs...

Every now and then we learn a particular term from the news that is repeatedly drummed into our vocabulary...

"Culling" (of stray crows and cats), "Impeachment" (of straying presidents), and now courtesy of the bloggers' case: "Seditious" (stray remarks that provoke controversy and dissentment)...

I personally know one of the two bloggers who got charged, and have visited his blog occasionally. I am rather shocked at this turn of events for him, but woudn't say I'msurprised . This friend has always been a highly intelligent person with an acute mind and even sharper tongue. Perhaps that's how he ended up cutting himself?

Although I hold the belief that the authors meant what they wrote or they would not have written it in the first place, I usually take everything I read with the prescribed pinch of salt...

But not every reader feels the same way. Some are more sensitive and more easily offended...

Many of my friends and acquaintances have often laughingly dropped potentially offensive comments about our fellow other races, and probably expect members of these other races to feel the same way about our race too. Some people think it's just a cool thing to do. To them, what's the big deal?

I would usually ignore these kind of negative remarks and privately hope these people would never have to encounter any racist attacks on themselves in their lifetime...

But racism is not a small or frivolous matter at all; it involves people's feelings and that could be potentially dangerous...

Now racism has probably been around from the time human beings start changing skin colours to suit their living environment, it is probably an instinctive act of survival and defence. It is a part of our human nature, whether we accept or deny it...

In my own opinion, no one is plain good or bad, black or white (no puns)... Everyone is just DIFFERENT...

Forget about world peace and harmony, if we can't even live or socialise with people that are not exactly like us...

We are not clones, are we? We can't expect the whole world to be duplicate versions of each other, for even then we'll still find other reasons to feel unhappy!

We are not all born the same for a very good reason: everyone have his or her own place in the world and serves his or her own purposes just by being who he or she is...

In any racist attacks, be it through words or action, there is always an instigator and always a victim... And someone is sure to feel hurt or harmed by it, or sometimes even get killed over it...

Why choose to be the attacker or instigator of hurtful remarks or actions? Why can't we go along a more positive, peaceful or spiritual approach instead?

The truth is, no one seems interested in solving such a problem so that everyone benefits... their ego just wouldn't allow it...

This world as we are living in is not governed by open hearts, but by tight fists, money-minds and over-achieving egos...

I wonder... is there anyone here who believe that no one particular race is "superior" to another? That we are all just "different"? That "variety" really could make life more interesting? I just wonder...

Now what about "freedom of speech"?

Let's just assume that there is such a thing possible in our "democratic" society...

It has often become just an excuse for people to comment and complain, or more likely, bitch, however they want without any responsibities or considerations for others...

Unless we could control the "sword" within our "words" and not harm anyone in the process, freedom of speech is not necessarily a good thing...

Some might pepper their text with descriptive words and pretty proses, yet others prefer the stronger spice of vulgarities. The only concern should be: who is reading it?

The kind of language and messages that emerge from a person's writings or mouth is usually a good gauge of the kind of person within...

Again, as long as no human beings or animals or minerals etc is harmed in the process, what's the big deal?

all's well that ends well...
posted at 07:38 PM

Finally, I've sorted out the many many photos taken during the last two days of shooting "Yum Sing!"...

Apologies for the long delay, but here they are:

Yum Sing - Money Is The Root Of All Evil

After the previous week's fiasco with a certain raving bitch female, we were forced to reshoot an entire scene back at the same location outside Liat Towers...

This time we enjoyed a smooth filming process, although that can't be said about my repeated attempts at sliding down the sloping wall of these steps! LOL

Yum Sing - Jeremy as Mick

Yum Sing - Sean (Director) Yum Sing - Wesley (Director of Photography)

Yum Sing - Haris Yum Sing - James

And that's that for the morning shoot, just one whole song-and-dance right in the middle of town...

Sheng and Desmond later generously treated Siying, Jeremy and I to a delicious breakfast at Steeple's Deli at Tanglin Shopping Centre (see HERE)...

Then came our final day of filming...

Yum Sing - Mrs Wong Yum Sing - Zak

Yum Sing - Zak the Middleman

Yum Sing - The Lovers Yum Sing - The Lovers

Yum Sing - The Lovers Yum Sing - The Lovers' Kiss

Yum Sing - The Lovers Many pics of the lovers played by Jeremy Sing and Sim Siying...

Yum Sing - Middleman

Yum Sing - Bad News Waltz

Gani gave Sheng and I a challenging choreo for the "Bad News" scene, which incorporated diverse dance moves like Waltz, Tango, and even Bhangra! Hope we manage to pull this off with style!

Yum Sing - Revelations

Yum Sing - Michelle (Consultant) Yum Sing - Brian

Yum Sing - Production Folks

And that was the end of all the scenes that were supposed to revolve within my character Zak's head...

Immediately after packing up, we rushed over to Borders Bookstore to shoot our final two scenes of the entire film...

Yum Sing - Zak checking out The Lovers

And here the director, Sean Cheong, made his cameo appearance...

Yum Sing - Zak at Borders Must display the store's logo okay!

And now, we are all anxiously awaiting the final pieces of the "Yum Sing!" jigsaw to be fitted in - the post-production editing work...

But basically, our jobs' more or less done!

"Yum Sing" to that!!!

Last weekend was fruitfully spent filming my third television commercial of the year...

This time, the ad is by MCYS (Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports), and I played a young father with a beautiful wife and three adorable kids...

The entire theme of this ad is to showcase plenty of adorable children and (hopefully) inspire people to get married younger and have lots of offsprings...

You'll find us sleeping in a large comfy bed while the cute little son sneaks up on us to take our picture...

Ya, ya, just laugh away!   At least now, after that Courts Ready Finance Ad, I really have a "wife" to "give the ipod to"! LOL

So, let me introduce my "new family"...

the new cleaner screening party...
posted at 09:02 PM

Right after the filming ended for the MCYS advertisement on Sunday, I made my way over to Jeremy's place where he'd arranged a film screening party for the cast and crew of "The New Cleaner" as well as the other films he did...

After chomping on some finger food and snacks that Jeremy prepared for us, we went through his earlier works like "The Long Weekend" and his one minute NDP winner about Singapore winning the World Cup! Then there was a sepia-tinged film called "The Red Carpet" by his fellow Objectifs coursemate, which left us slightly bewildered...

Then finally we watched "The New Cleaner", a film about encountering another unrelated person who looks exactly like you...

I think, all in all, it was a successful attempt despite very minor hiccups here and there, probably only noticeable by those involved in its film-making process...

And of course, the beautiful and evocative music composed specially and separately by Babes and August gave the whole film an inspiring and contemplative edge...

Hope the film reaches out to more audiences all over the world!

christmas in oz / cameras new and used...
posted at 10:47 PM

Over the past few days, I have made several major purchases that took a sizeable chunk out of my bank account...

Since my return from Lang Tengah Island in August, I have been yearning and planning for another travel opportunity. Finally, together with dear Katrina, we gathered some travel info from the NATAS Travel Fair and made plans for Christmas in Australia...

Here's the deal...

Kat and her mum will be sharing the same journey with me to Sydney on Christmas Day, move on to Melbourne together later, then return to Singapore while I tour Tasmania on my own...

So the itinerary goes like this...

24th Dec - Depart Singapore

25th Dec - Arrive Sydney / Dinner with Kat's old pal Jerry and family...

26th Dec - Enjoy Sydney

27th Dec - Enjoy Sydney

28th Dec - Depart Sydney / Arrive Melbourne

29th Dec - Enjoy Melbourne / Visit Kat's old pal Ken at his restaurant...

30th Dec - Enjoy Melbourne

31st Dec - Depart Melbourne / Kat & Mum Arrive Singapore / Me Arrive Hobart

1st Jan  -  Enjoy New Year's Day in Hobart

2nd Jan -  Enjoy Hobart

3rd Jan -  Enjoy Grand Hobart Tour

4th Jan -  Enjoy Grand Port Arthur Tour

5th Jan -  Depart Hobart / Arrive Melbourne / Depart Melbourne / Arrive Singapore

And the good news is...

We've already confirmed and booked the above trip on Monday!

Now if anyone here knows of any good recommendations for budget lodgings and must-see places to visit, do email me directly to:

merman13@gmail.com

And I will check them out!

The other thing I did when I knew this Australian trip was more or less something I am definitely going to do this year, was to get myself a better camera to record the beautiful sights and sceneries that Australia could offer...

So I took a detour to Funan Centre and immediately set my eyes on the all new and thoroughly marvellous Fujifilm Finepix F10 Digital Camera

Fujifilm Finepix F10 Digital Camera

This is an ideal camera for me, with all the functions that I could ever ask for (at this moment) that will suit an avid photography freak like me...

Just check out the specifications by clicking the picture and link above!

And to cope with my trigger-happy instincts especially in a paradise like Australia (my dream home), I got myself a 1-Gigabyte XD memory card to supplement my current collection of 512MB, 256MB, 64MB (belonging to Bryan) and 16MB cards...

Although I have been using this camera for the past few days (see the pics I took starting from my entry about the MCYS TVC onwards...), there are still many exciting functions I have yet to try out...

Who wants to be my test model?

With this new camera, I can feel less sentimental about selling my 1-year-old (only!) trusty Fujifilm Finepix F420 which I have used to snap all those beautiful photos in my Europe and Fuzhou trips last year...

Fujifilm Finepix F420 Digital Camera

Click on the above picture for a review of this much appreciated and beloved camera of mine...

Although this wonderful piece of equipment has been well-travelled and kinda losing it's original sheen, it is still in a good working condition and should continue to serve another few more years (depending on how you use lah!)...

I am willing to part with it to anyone who can offer me S$150 (original price was S$649!!!) for it...

Again, do call me (for those who know me personally) or email me directly at:

merman13@gmail.com

I might even throw in some freebies and assessories, depending on your offer, and it's strictly first-come-first-serve...

So do act fast now!!!

mini reunion at brewerkz...
posted at 01:44 AM

On Monday, it was arranged that some ex-colleagues from my previous job in an I.T. company would meet up for dinner at Brewerkz Restaurant. I arrived earlier than the rest to meet Say Wee just as he got off duty...

Say Wee works there part-time, which is in line with his own company and main interest, Homebrew, so I took his recommendation of Steam Beer (5.0% abv), and chose the Roasted Cornish Game Hen and Fried Calamari from the menu...

Brewerkz - Roasted Cornish Game Hen with Steam Beer

The petit portion of the above roasted fowl was a deception as I took ages to complete the meal, but I savoured every succulent bite...

The rather light and mildly sweet Steam Beer suited my tastebuds too, and didn't take much of it for me to feel a persistent smile appearing on my face the rest of the evening...

Timothy joined us as I was finishing up the above meal, while Jackson, Jenny and Raymond came much later...

It was just like old days, when this group of us from various departments (plus or minus one or two more folks) would gather for lunch almost daily during our novaSPRINT days...

Well, almost...

Jackson and Raymond

For everyone's moved on, and judging by Jackson's and Raymond's latest well-fed look above, must be doing rather well...

Jenny and Timothy

Jenny still looked as pretty as ever, and didn't seem to have changed much over the past couple of years. Which is a good thing!

Timothy and Me

Tim's a new father, so that kind of explained his worn-out look. But by his own accounts, should be doing quite okay in his well-paid job...

Say Wee

Say Wee has obviously lost some weight, probably due to juggling his love life with his own business as well as this new job, which sounded pretty physically demanding...

To me, the price of living one's dream might be high, but surely the fruits of one's own labour taste that much sweeter...

All in all, I was glad to see how everyone's turned out in just a matter of two years. May our paths crossed again in future...

Ah Law commented that I was very stringent in my assessment of the performances; he'd given them pretty high marks...

At least I let all of them pass...

We didn't stay for the prize-presentation, but sat at a nearby tent to sample some floral-herbal and Oolong tea served by none other than Asia's one and only tea connoiseur, Miss Goh, and her daughter!

According to Miss Goh, she has toured the whole world and sampled every variety of tea available, and is only one of slightly more than a hundred tea tasters worldwide! Pretty impressive, right?

After that, we left for Jurong Point Shopping Mall where we sat down at Crystal Jade Restaurant for dinner, which left the three of us full to the brim...

But Ah Law was yearning for a taste of his hometown's Ramly Burger, although he only just came back from JB that afternoon, so we went back to the pasar malaam tent for it...

And found...

My dream car!!! It was a boxy Suzuki Swift (if I remembered correctly), and if I ever were to buy a car of my own, it would be something like this...

be with me, my beloved love...
posted at 10:24 PM

Dearest Boo,

It's been a while, actually years, since we last went out on a proper date and did things that people going on dates do. I guess I have not really accepted the fact that we are no longer together...

I missed you lots...

And it was brought home to me especially after I watched the film, "Be With Me", by local film-maker, Eric Khoo...

Be With Me

I was sitting alone in a cinema hall full of loving couples, but that's not what made me feel so lonely...

It was the sentimental and heart-felt theme of this feature film: Love, or the lack of it, that reminded me how much love is in my life right now... and how little...

In the movie...

There was a blind and deaf lady who overcame her physical restrictions and personal tragedies and became an inspiration for others with similar or lesser disabilities, and now, able-bodied movie-goers...

Theresa Chan

There was an elderly man who tirelessly cooked up meals after delicious meals for his ailing wife at the hospital, keeping her company even when she's no longer physically there...

Chiew Sung Ching

There was his social worker son who gave his loving attention to the blind and deaf lady, and brought his lonely father to her one day...

Lawrence Yong

There was an overweight and self-conscious security guard who could not begin to express his affections and lust for the gorgeous lady of his dreams, until it was too late...

Seet Keng Yew

There was a school girl who liked another school girl who liked a school boy, which ended in tragedy...

Ezann Lee & Samantha Tan

There was love, a lot of love, in this movie. Yet, by some strange and deep contrast, each character was a lonely soul...

At the end of the film, silent tears were streaming down my cheeks even as I heard sobs and sniffs coming from the lovers sitting around me. No one uttered a word as we left the hall...

I had wanted to watch this movie with you, Boo, but ended up watching it by myself. When you did watch it on a later date, however, you told me you felt it was... not such a great movie, you weren't moved...

I guess things have really changed between us after all these years, although it seemed only just yesterday that we were a couple...

Even though we still communicated and kept in touch regularly, it will never be the same...

I sincerely hope you will find someone to love and to love you back as much as I do now, which was more than I ever did before...

I love you dearly, Boo. I still do, and I always will...

But I still hope...

One day...

You will...

Be with me...

photo friday - burn...

It must be fate or a truly strange coincidence that this week's PhotoFriday.com Weekly Challenge theme turned out to be none other than...

Burn

Burn - Edric Hsu

Pictures size: 480 x 640 pixels

Digital Camera: Fujifilm Finepix F-420

This image of burning joss paper "money" (entry #118) was taken EXACTLY a year ago, on 23rd September 2004...

On this particular day, my brother Eric and I had accompanied Father back to his hometown in Fuzhou, China, and we visited our ancestral clan hall and paid our respects to our departed ancestors from generations ago...

And part of the ritual was to burn paper offerings, which represent currencies of the spirit world, for our relatives in the spirit world...

illo friday - fresh...
posted at 04:05 AM under snapshots of merman...

After weeks of participating in PhotoFriday.com's Weekly Photo Challenge, I am now ready to submit entries for Illustration Friday too...

And this week's illustration theme is...

Fresh

Whiteboard Markers & Adobe ImageReady 7.0

The first thing that I thought of when I saw the theme, was freshly laid eggs, with eggs being one of my all-time favourite food ingredient, so that's how this particular image came about...

And for my renewed interests and attempts at illustration work, I have chosen a fresh approach:

Firstly, I drew the black outlines onto a whiteboard with a black marker...

Then I took a photo of it with my digital camera, and uploaded it to my PC...

I edited the digital image using Adobe ImageReady 7.0 software and added in the colours and shadings etc to form the complete picture...

Hope you like the end result...

catch me on incredible tales 2 tonight...
posted at 08:55 PM

Finally, after waiting so many months since the filming wrapped, my episode on "Incredible Tales 2" (Coffee & Pau), will be telecast tonight on Channel 5 at 10pm!!!

Incredible Tale 2 - Coffee & Pau

I play the rookie CID relating the story, sort of the narrator, of how the cleaning auntie always deliver breakfast to an empty room, so I shall start and end the story...

And it is a sad tragic tale based on a real-life incident too...

Catch me if you can!
